Fostering Self-Reliance & Self-Care When You Need it the Most

“Lauren truly cares about you.  You can feel it. And it makes all the difference.”
~ Stacey

We all have mental health issues.

Diagnosed or not, we all struggle to:

  • navigate stressful circumstances
  • hear our inner voice and trust it
  • bounce back when life kicks us around a bit.

The college population is especially susceptible to the ebbs and flows of these common challenges given the high pressure to perform,to fit in and to figure out their future in a timely way.

There is a real need for mental health speakers to contribute to fostering resiliency, self-reliance, self-care and hope for this population.

As someone who knows firsthand how tough college can be to navigate with mental health challenges, Lauren has a way of reaching students in a practical, vulnerable and empowering way.

Lauren speaks from her personal experience, as chronicled in her multi-award-winning and internationally best-selling book, The Other Side of Bipolar.

College was a particularly rough time for her yet she prevailed – by seeking support, knowledge, tools and taking a non-traditional approach to her schooling.

After college hopping between five different schools with a brief “failure to launch” semester back at home, she was able to receive not only her B.S. but her MEd. and set forth on a very successful career path.

She has learned a tremendous amount about what it takes to make college work for the non-traditional student so that each and every one of them can find the success they are destined for.

Mental health issues are prevalent on college campuses and are leading impediment to academic success.

In an American College Health Association report released in 2011, students cited depression and anxiety as among the top impediments to academic performance.

Recent data from the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) shows that:

  • More than 11% of college students have been diagnosed or treated for anxiety in the past year and more than 10 percent reported being diagnosed or treated for depression.
  • More than 40 percent of college students have felt more than an average amount of stress within the past 12 months.
  • More than 80 percent of college students felt overwhelmed by all they had to do in the past year and 45 percent have felt things were hopeless.

What makes this worse is that college students are not seeking help

More than 45 percent of young adults who stopped attending college because of mental health related reasons did not request accommodations. Fifty percent of them did not access mental health services and support either.

Why? The number one reason students don’t seek help is the concern of stigma if they come forward.

Suicide is a real concern

  • Seven percent of college students have “seriously considered suicide” during the past year.
  • Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death on college campuses.

Students have emphasized the critical need for the following services and supports to be available on campus:

  • Mental health training for faculty, staff and students
  • Suicide prevention programs
  • Mental health information during campus tours, orientation, health classes and other campus-wide events

There is a rising demand for more mental health support on campus, and Lauren can help you change these statistics.

Lauren is a CFMW with Access Consciousness®, an ASHA Certified Medical Speech-Language Pathologist, and a registered Yoga Instructor.

Why I do what I do; A personal note…
I have spent a life long journey learning to care for myself.  Growing up overly sensitive to my environment, and the people in it, finding my feet in stressful circumstances was difficult.

I found myself in a chronic stress cycle in my adolescence and spent many rocky years looking for ways to ease my busy mind, balance my moods, form healthy relationships and develop a self-confidence that could carry me through.

I have spent years of study in the western medical system and alternative systems; yoga, meditation, energy transformation and life skills training to compile a unique viewpoint of and way out of the chronic stress cycle most of us are living in.

I have put these transformational tools to use over the course of my 13-plus year career as a medical speech pathologist, for my international business growth, to launch my first book to best-seller / multi-award-winner and, most joyfully, to cultivate a sense of peace and strength in myself along the way.

I have taught these tools to tens of thousands of people around the world who report the same effects I enjoy – simultaneous success in outward life achievements and self-care / actualization.

I have a passion for speaking to others in helping professions on how caregivers can care for themselves while doing what they love, adolescents and college student who are struggling with mental wellness and to leaders / creatives pushing their growing edge to go for the “impossibles” in their lives while enjoying more ease.

My mother always says, “Life is too short to stand in line and stare at the back of someone’s head.”

Life indeed is too short to not care for yourself, shy away from your dreams or just settle for what is. I truly believe we are all unique – we have singular viewpoints of the world, special gifts to offer and new paths to forge.

Consciousness development and life mastery are the final frontiers for trailblazers like you – what have you yet to explore? I would be delighted to assist you in that quest!
